The Elephant Hill on the southern end of the Aberdares Ranges, is about 90km north of Nairobi, is an ideal location for a day hike excursion. The Aberdares Ranges are situated west of Mt Kenya in the central highlands between Nyeri and Naivasha, and stretch 70km long from North to South.
The Aberdares are the water catchment areafeeding two of the largest dams supplying over 95% of Nairobi’s water needs,
Mau Eburu forest is one of the 22 gazetted forest blocks. It is comprised of 420,000 hectare Mau Forest Complex, within Kenya’s Rift Valley. The Eburu forest area covers 8715.3hectares (87 squares kms) of pristine indigenous forest, nestled in the folds of a 2,820 meters high active mountain overlooking Lake Naivasha to the South East, Lake Elementaita to the North and Lake Nakuru to the North West.
Menengai crater (2490mhigh), is enormous, about 12 km across and 500m deep, situated on the Northernside of Nakuru. It is the second largest surviving volcanic crater in the world, with a surface area of 90kmsq
Mt Suswa is a magnificent extinct volcano in the Rift Valley. It is famed for the many caves on its E slopes, which are all easy to access and none are too long or complex. No special gear or knowledge is required to explore these systems.
The Kinale hill ‘miniature’ of Mt Longonot lies on the floor of the rift valley adjacent to Kikuyu Escarpment. The hill rises at an altitude of 2500 meters above sea level, on the Eastern side which is the windward side.
The Ol Donyo Orok Mountain also called Namanga Hills is situated in southern Kenya to the Tanzanian border in the Namanga Division. The mountain is a stretched triangular shape, almost like an arrow pointing north. The short side faces the Tanzanian border (and one corner actually crosses). The highest peak is 2548 m.
Located in the northern part of Nairobi city, Karura Forest is 1,041 hectares, making it one of the largest urban gazette forests in the world. It’s managed by Kenya Forest Service in conjunction with Friends of Karura Forest. Plantations cover 632 hectares while Indigenous trees cover 260 hectares of the forest.
The name Longonot is derived from the Maasai word Oloonong’ot meaning mountains of many spurs or steep ridges. Longonot Park is 90 km from Nairobi and covers 52 square km, most of it being occupied by Mt. Longonot – a young volcano rising to 2,776 meters above sea level. The sides of the mountain have beautiful V-shaped valleys and ridges.
The Ol Donyo Sabuk mountain, also known as Kilimambogo or Buffalo Mountain, situated about 85km north-east of Nairobi, and about 25km east of Thika town. It covers an area of about 20 square kilometers, with most of its surface covered by a natural forest and habited by Buffaloes, monkeys, antelopes and other grazers. The hiking trail is 9kilometers to the summit 2145 meters above sea level.
Lake Elementaita (derived from the Maasai word,muteita meaning “dust place”) is a beautiful soda lake in the Great Rift Valley, located some 130 km from Nairobi, between Lake Nakuru and L. Naivasha. The lake is Kenya’s latest Ramsar site having attained the status in 2005 and also another prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012.
Gatamaiyu Forest is a remnant of the Kereita Forest which is an extension of the Aberdares forest. It’s also the source of Nairobi River, an Important Bird Area for the birding lovers & a real ideal place for hiking and nature walks.
